EARTH DAY at ELTE TÓK

We also celebrated Earth Day at our faculty. The Department of Natural Sciences organized a joint program with the Hungarian Biological Society, which provided an excellent opportunity to learn about soil and leaf-dwelling animals.

We also organized a lecture for our students, where they could gain a deeper insight into this unique community. However, the most popular part of the program was the hands-on experience with the leaf litter and the animals living in it. Walking barefoot through the leaf litter, searching for small animals in the litter, and observing them through a magnifying glass was a tremendous experience not only for our students but also for the elementary school students from the neighboring Gyertyánffy Practice School.  The main attraction, however, was getting to know the non-native but enormous millipedes. Although these creatures are frightening to many at first glance, by the end most of the children were happily letting them crawl on their hands and arms.
